Is Nyu Steinhardt Easy to Get Into

Steinhardt is situated in Greenwich Village adjacent to Washington Park, close to Tisch School of the Arts, NYU School of Law, and other NYU graduate schools. Greenwich Village offers a stimulating setting in which to live and attend school.

Bleecker Street includes a variety of cafes, live music venues, restaurants, and clubs. Fat Cat Jazz shouldn't be missed for live music, billiards, and other games.

Shopping is unparalleled in Greenwich Village — from vintage clothing, books, and records to more upscale brands, the neighborhood has something for everyone's sartorial taste.

NYU Steinhardt moved into the area in 1890 and was the first American university to offer a school of pedagogy. The institution is now NYU's largest graduate school and currently offers a variety of Bachelor's-level, Master's-level, and Ph.D. programs, as well as Advanced Certificates.

Steinhardt consistently earns high accolades from globally-recognized rankings institutions. According to U.S. News, Steinhardt ranks #6 for Best Graduate School, #8 in Occupational Therapy, and among the Top 20 Best Education Schools for Education Policy, Education Psychology, and Counseling.

The Steinhardt graduate student population is over 80% female, with a total enrollment of just over 600 students. Master's, Ph.D., and Advanced Certificate students typically exceed the number of undergraduate students.

Some of the most respected experts in their fields have graced the Steinhardt faculty roster throughout the years. Among the most accomplished include civil rights author and activist James Weldon Johnson, Tuskegee Airman Roscoe Brown, and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Diane Ravitch.

Coming up, we'll explore the essentials to applying and gaining admission to Steinhardt, tuition information, high-achieving alumni, and more about one of the most competitive schools in New York, if not the nation.

NYU Steinhardt Acceptance Rate

Non-Ph.D. programs at Steinhardt have some of the highest acceptance rates in the country. Steinhardt's undergraduate acceptance rate hovers around 42%, while the Master's and Advanced Certificates acceptance rates at NYU Steinhardt historically average 50%.

The Ph.D. programs, however, have as selective as a 5% acceptance rate – this translates to 2-4 full-time students per year, at the minimum, for the most competitive programs.

Admission to Ph.D. programs like the degree in Media, Culture, and Communication is highly competitive, and the shortlist of candidates is typically contacted for a video interview.

NYU Steinhardt only admits Ph.D. students who they can fund through a combination of on-campus work placements, research apprenticeships, and fellowships. Most students enrolled in Ph.D. programs receive full fellowship funding for the duration of their doctoral program.

The admissions team recommends that applicants apply for fellowships through the Ford Foundation, Gates Foundation, National Science Foundation, Fulbright Scholars Program, and other pre-doctoral fellowships. External funding has no impact on admissions to either the Master's or Advanced Certificate programs.

NYU Steinhardt Alumni

NYU Steinhardt alumni move on to become powerful players in the business arena, among other industries. The school's network of over 82,000 active alumni includes civil rights lawyer Gloria Allred, artist Romare Bearden, singer Lisa Loeb, composer Alan Menken, and film director Martin Scorcese.

Accomplished author Judy Blume (class of 1961) was recently named NYU Alumni Changemaker of the Year, and Kim King (class of 1999) earned the title of 2022 Connecticut Teacher of the Year.

Four Steinhardt alumni were recently included in the 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 list – nominations typically exceed 15,000, so it is quite a feat for even one alumnus to receive the honor.

Willa Tellekson-Flash (class of 2018) is the Founder and Director of Community at Public, a marketing/advertising firm, and was named to the list due to overseeing the growth of the company's user base and boosting the company's valuation to $1.2 billion in the past year.

Victoria CaƱa, also representing the class of 2016, is a lead producer on Riot Games' Legends of Runeterra and CEO of her own boutique gaming studio Cat Quartet Games. One of her company's products – the Gladius board game – won multiple awards and generated over $100,000 in Kickstarter funds.

Glossier, a billion-dollar make-up and skincare company Glossier – whose waiting lists for popular products exceeds the tens of thousands – was founded by class of 2007 alumna Emily Weiss.

NYU Steinhardt Tuition

Tuition fees at NYU Steinhardt depend upon the following: intended major or program, college from which the applicant matriculated, term of admission, and # of credit hours taken. Applicants may use the tuition tool to determine their tuition.

For example, a student applying to take nine credit hours per semester in the spring of 2022 would pay $17,478 in tuition and $1,112 in fees.

The school recommends that students make additional considerations and allocations for the following items: $27,420 in on/off-campus boarding, $782 for books and supplies, $1132 for transportation, $3796 for miscellaneous purchases, and $3645 for health insurance.

Steinhardt does offer financial aid packages for enrolled graduate students, which are based on financial need and academic merit, and include federal loans.

Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify.

Graduate students at NYU Steinhardt may be eligible to earn a direct unsubsidized loan of up to $20,500 each academic year, which would cover all tuition costs for that year.

Additionally, the federal direct graduate PLUS loan is a credit-based loan meant to supplement the direct unsubsidized loan – students can qualify for the cost of attendance, minus the total of any other financial aid packages.

How to Get Into NYU Steinhardt?

Steinhardt's degrees stipulate different admissions requirements: the school offers a variety of programs for undergraduates and graduates in fields like health, education, and applied psychology.

Many dual degree programs at Steinhardt do not exist anywhere else in the nation. One of the most exciting BA/MA programs is in Education Studies and Education, Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy.

This unique dual degree program seeks to help students understand and innovate relationships between educational organizations, schools, and communities throughout the nation and globe. Those who enroll in the program may desire to lead education-focused nonprofit organizations or other advocacy groups.

For example, the Digital Media Design & Learning program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0, professional experience in the field or a related field, and basic technology skills.

Interested applicants should also submit a resume, statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, all post-secondary transcripts from previously-attended institutions, exam results for English proficiency, and an optional portfolio. Portfolio samples should include exemplary work that highlights the applicant's niche talents and creative style.

Several master's programs and Ph.D. programs do not require a portfolio but encourage applicants to consider their dissertation topic or research interests prior to applying.

Steinhardt seeks to admit students who have an established background in the area they wish to pursue, and they desire incoming research agendas to demonstrate compatibility with the work of current faculty members.

Should You Attend NYU Steinhardt?

It is clear that NYU Steinhardt is a well-ranked school that offers a variety of programs in a stimulating, intellectual environment. Steinhardt alumni experience success in virtually every industry, and particularly so as entrepreneurs.

What makes Steinhardt unique is its commitment to educating the whole person. Additionally, Steinhardt offers majors and dual degree programs that students won't find at any other national or global institutions.

Students who are interested in immersive study in media, culture, and communication should absolutely apply to Steinhardt – the fact that the school is situated in NYC (one of the nation's media capitals) is an added benefit.

Music is another popular field of study at Steinhardt. Whether interested in pursuing the performative, innovative, or administrative pathway in music, students can expect the nation's best in professional training.

The nutrition and food program blends the science of digestion and the history of food culture. The education program goes far beyond the mere act of teaching and provides students with the resources to build their future schools and curriculums.

The students who are best suited to thrive at Steinhardt are curious, who understand the interdisciplinary nature of subjects and industries, and who are committed, above all else, to improving health and wellbeing for their fellow members of the human race.
